Always wearing the librarian head...

I had a successful evening last night giving a workshop/ talk on online resources for new writers. Where to look for stuff, how to hang on to it (and remember where you put it) and how to share it/ other information if you are so inclined. It went really well despite the heat and noisy fans (I had one blowing at me and the laptop constantly, so I wasn't as hot as the attendees). And there were free drinks and jammy dodgers - fantastic.

It was interesting though, because when I planned it I did so the same way I plan my day job workshops - hence the 'always wearing the librarian head' - do a mix of talking and hands-on; have a handout  and Q&A session etc. So when it comes to planning talks the methodology is pretty much the same even though the content may be wildly different (medical databases vs. writing communities). I got some good feedback about one or two things I could have included but overall I'm happy with the way it turned out. (The sleepless night was quite unnecessary, but at least I didn't have to resort to herbal tea.)

In other news...Alt.Fiction 2010 at the Quad in Derby (Derbyshire, UK) is fast approaching and they've now put up the schedule for the day on the website: http://altfiction.co.uk/the-programme - it appears that tickets are still available if you're thinking of going. I had a great time when I went a couple of years ago and I'm looking forward to going again. Among the panels, workshops, and readings there's also going to be a late night screening although they don't say of what - perhaps that'll only be told on the day. I shall be going by train as Chum #1 will have to dash off for some day-jobbery (but in the evening, so, night-jobbery?) and I may not be done when she has to depart. Hmmm. Maybe I should go by car. Bizarrely, evening trains rarely stop at my station. I will ponder this. O_O

Completely off topic but you MUST tell me if you like the new look of the university buildings. I spent way too much time making them shiny and the bright and glowy staircase be bright and glowy.

Was that you? They're absolutely gorgeous and you can see the buildings much better from a distance now; they definitely catch your eye on the horizon. (Although the glowy saircase took me by surprise the first time I saw it as I wasn't expecting that and I thought I was seeing things. :-P )
